STORY: The Historical Romance Novel

When the Emperor wants to see me, I walk in to discover him slumped in his throne, staring at the ground sadly. I look at him pitifully and take a seat on the arm of the chair. I wrap my arm around his shoulder and lift his chin up with my hand.

“What’s the matter, darling? Why do you look so sad?”

“I feel like I have the weight of the world hanging over my shoulders.”

“I thought I told you not to worry about that anymore,” I say sweetly. “You know I’m here when you want to escape from it all.”

The Emperor takes my hand and pulls me into his lap. He looks down into my eyes intensely.

“Take me away'” he says quietly. “Oh please, honey, won’t you just take me away?”

“That’s what I’m here for, darling. You know that.”

“I can’t pay you anymore,” he says sorrowfully. “I no longer come to you as The Emperor. I come only as a man now.”

“It is no matter, darling,” I reassure him. “You know you’ll always have a special place in my heart.”

“I’m going to lose everything.”

He looks down at the floor and starts crying. I hold him close to me and wipe away the tears.

“Don’t worry about it, darling. You can always start all over again. We both know you’re very good at that.”

“How could you ever love a horrible person like me?” he asks, looking into my eyes again.

“The same way I love all of the horrible people I’m with,” I reply cheerfully. “With all of my heart.”

The Emperor smiles at me and kisses me on the hand.

“I’m very grateful to you,” he says.

“I know you are, darling. Now, come on. Enough of your moping. You haven’t slept all night again nor eaten anything all day. Let’s get you well-fed and comfortable in bed.”

He smiles at me as we leave the throne room to prepare ourselves for the night ahead.

The End
