I am sitting at the Cafe alone when my phone suddenly starts ringing. I don’t usually answer unknown numbers, but today I have a feeling I should pick it up.
“Is this Betsey Horton?” the voice on the other end of the line asks.
“Who, may I ask, is calling?”
“It’s Jason. Jason from the Gym. We met on Tinder, remember?”
“Actually, I don’t remember. After awhile they all start to look the same. Wait a minute, is this Andrew?”
“No, it’s Jason. From the Gym. You never called me back so I just wanted to follow up on that offer I extended you. You’re still eligible for a free trial membership, complete with special one-on-one personal training sessions with me.”
“Hmm…” I debate the question carefully to myself for a minute before deciding on the answer. “Well, Jason. The answer is obvious. I’ll take the membership, but I’ll have to decline the special one-on-one sessions with you.”
“But why?” he asks innocently.
“Because you’re still married.”
“I’m not married. I’m Jason! You must be thinking of Sam.”
“Nice try, Pretty Boy. That line’s not going to work on me.
“Okay, so you turned me down again. So what? Maybe we’ll start mysteriously running into each other at the Gym. I’ll pick you up there.”
“I don’t think so. I prefer to go at a time of day when few people are alive.”
“Me too,” he says with a flashy smile. “Yeah, it’s cool, it’s cool. I’ll just see you down there sometime. Maybe we can work out together.”
“I don’t think so,” I say.
“Whatever!” he pouts. “You haven’t even seen me lift.”
“Okay, that’s enough for now, Andrew.”
“I told you. It’s Jason.”
“Okay, Jason. I’m going back to work now.”
“So it’s a date then?”
I laugh to myself and promptly hang up the phone.
